The Commission on Higher Education (CHE) is a body under the Kurdistan Accrediting Association for Education (KAAE), responsible for accrediting universities and higher education institutions across the Kurdistan Region. It ensures that institutions meet rigorous standards of academic quality, governance, and institutional effectiveness, promoting continuous improvement in teaching, learning, and research.
The Commission plays a central role in advancing higher education to meet international standards and strengthen institutional accountability. Through its accreditation process, it helps universities and colleges enhance quality assurance systems, improve student learning outcomes, and align academic programs with both regional priorities and global expectations.

Stages of Higher Education Accreditation Process
Registration & Initial Engagement
Institutions begin by registering with KAAE to express their interest in accreditation. During this phase, they receive orientation and guidance on eligibility requirements, standards, and documentation expectations.
Eligibility Phase
The institution conducts a self-assessment against KAAE’s Foundational Criteria for Eligibility to confirm readiness for accreditation.

Candidacy Phase
Initial Accreditation Review
Once the institution demonstrates substantial compliance with KAAE’s Higher Education Standards, a comprehensive peer evaluation visit is conducted.
Accreditation Decision
Based on peer review findings, the Commission on Higher Education renders an accreditation decision. Accredited institutions are recognized for meeting KAAE’s quality standards and are listed in the official KAAE Directory of Accredited Institutions.
